Whoopi Goldberg, an Academy Award-winning actress and a longtime co-host of The View, made an eye-opening statement during a recent episode of the show. On the eve of her 69th birthday, Goldberg expressed that—just like many Americans—she works to support her family and wouldn’t continue on The View if she were financially independent.
“I understand that people are struggling. Me too. I work for a living,” Goldberg stated, addressing the audience during a discussion on economic hardships and political issues.
She emphasized her reality, adding:
“If I had all the money in the world, I wouldn’t be here, okay? I’m a working person, you know? My kid has to feed her family. My great-granddaughter has to be fed. I know it’s tough out there.”
Her comments seemed to hint at dissatisfaction with her salary and working conditions on the long-running ABC talk show.

Goldberg’s statements echoed similar frustrations expressed by former co-host Meghan McCain, who once criticized The View panel for being disconnected from the realities of everyday Americans.
McCain previously recounted an intense meeting at ABC News, saying:
“I remember yelling, ‘Some of you need to start interacting with people who don’t make six figures a year. You have to understand the reality of those living on minimum wage.’”
Goldberg, one of the longest-tenured hosts on the show, has been a fixture on The View since 2007. Her longevity makes her one of the most recognizable faces on the panel, second only to Joy Behar, who was absent from that day’s broadcast.
Despite her extensive tenure, Goldberg’s comments suggest that she feels undervalued, raising questions about whether salary discrepancies or network decisions could lead her to walk away from the show altogether.
Beyond ‘The View’—Goldberg’s Expanding Career
Outside of The View, Goldberg has remained busy with various acting projects. In recent years, she has starred in TV series such as The Stand, Harlem, and Star Trek: Picard, reprising her iconic role as Guinan.
Additionally, she has been actively developing Sister Act 3 for Disney+. In a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon, Goldberg confirmed that the script had to be revised after the passing of legendary actress Maggie Smith, who was expected to return for the third installment.
