Whoopi Goldberg at Risk for Kidney Disease—Could Her Weight-Loss Medication Be to Blame?
Whoopi Goldberg’s Health Concerns Amid Weight Loss Journey
Whoopi Goldberg recently turned heads with a stunning fashion statement at Paris Fashion Week. The View co-host, 69, who typically embraces a relaxed style, opted for a sophisticated black silk wrap dress with gold-accented belt loops. She paired the look with sleek black heeled boots, a leather handbag, and signature round-framed glasses.
A Surprising Fashion Transformation
Whoopi’s attendance at Alexandre Mattiussi’s Fall 2025 showcase may come as a surprise to some, given her past remarks about high fashion. In October 2023, she reflected on the harsh criticism she received for her bold outfit choice at the 1993 Oscars, admitting that the negative feedback deeply affected her.
“It hurt my feelings, I’m not going to lie,” she confessed in an interview with Page Six. “You start to wonder, ‘Do I really look that ridiculous?’”

Whoopi’s Weight-Loss Journey and Health Risks
Over the past year, Whoopi has been candid about her weight-loss efforts. After noticing a significant weight gain while filming Till, she took action. In 2021, she weighed close to 300 pounds and decided to turn to the weight-loss medication Mounjaro to help manage her health.
During an episode of The View, she openly discussed her experience while addressing Oprah Winfrey’s use of Ozempic.
“I will tell you, I weighed almost 300 pounds when I made Till,” Whoopi revealed. “I had taken all those steroids and was on different medications. One of the things that helped me lose weight was Mounjaro—that’s what I use.”
A Personal Reflection on Body Image
Whoopi acknowledged that her weight has fluctuated throughout her life, but she rarely paid attention to it until she saw how much she had changed.
“When I realized how much I had put on—it shocked me,” she admitted. “I’ve always felt like myself, but then I saw me and thought, ‘Oh, that’s a lot of me.’”
Despite her changing weight, Whoopi emphasized that external opinions never dictated her self-image. “I don’t listen to what people say about me, so it was never an issue,” she stated. “But for some, it’s difficult to determine what a ‘normal’ weight even is.”

Potential Health Concerns
Whoopi encouraged self-awareness and taking control of one’s health, defending the use of weight-loss drugs when necessary.
“You have to take responsibility for yourself and understand what’s happening with your body,” she said. “There’s nothing wrong with seeking help when needed.”
However, concerns have been raised about the possible side effects of medications like Mounjaro, including risks related to kidney health. As more people turn to these drugs for weight management, the conversation about long-term effects continues.
