Whoopi Goldberg’s Health Struggles and Extended Absences

Whoopi Goldberg has been a prominent figure on The View since she joined in 2007, but her recent absences have raised concerns among fans. Over the years, she has faced multiple health challenges that have forced her to take breaks from the show, sometimes for weeks at a time.

In 2019, Goldberg was hospitalized for a severe case of pneumonia and sepsis, which nearly took her life. “I had pneumonia, and I was septic. Pneumonia in both lungs, which meant there was fluid, there was all kinds of stuff going on. And yes, I came very, very close to leaving the Earth,” she revealed in a video message to fans.

Despite recovering, she faced additional health setbacks, including sciatica, a painful nerve condition that left her relying on a walker. More recently, she contracted COVID-19 multiple times, causing her to miss major show moments, including the season premiere in September 2023.

The Unexpected Setbacks That Kept Whoopi Away

Aside from serious illnesses, Goldberg has also dealt with shorter-term health problems that disrupted her ability to host The View. In April 2019, just a month after her pneumonia battle, she was hospitalized again due to a severe 24-hour bug. Though it was brief, it left her weak and recovering for several days.

In June 2021, sciatica returned, forcing her off the show for a week. Upon her return, she explained, “I was out because I was dealing with something called sciatica, which is basically a bulging disc in your back, and it impacts the sciatic nerve, which sends pain down your leg.” The condition made walking difficult and painful, requiring extended medical care.

Most recently, in February 2025, she caught the flu, missing three consecutive days of The View. When she returned, she recounted how severe it was: “This flu is really awful. My bones hurt. My head was hurting. Everything was hurting. Even the cat wouldn’t come near me.”

How Whoopi Goldberg Plans to Move Forward

Despite these setbacks, Goldberg remains committed to her role on The View and her work beyond the show. She was recently named the Global Patron for the United Nations Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF), reinforcing her dedication to global advocacy.

“I am proud to join WPHF as its Global Patron and stand alongside women who are fighting every day to create a world where peace and gender equality are the norm, not the exception,” she stated. This role allows her to make an impact on a larger scale while continuing to be a voice for important issues.

While her health remains a concern, Goldberg is determined to balance her responsibilities and take better care of herself. Fans can expect her to keep making appearances on The View, though she may need to take breaks when necessary to focus on recovery and self-care.
