Viewers Stunned by Today Show’s Choice to Replace Alex Cullen After His Controversial Exit—Backlash Erupts: ‘She’s Not Worthy!’

Danika Mason Officially Named Today’s New Sports Presenter
Just over a month after Alex Cullen’s sudden departure from Today, the show has finally revealed his replacement—sparking a wave of mixed reactions from viewers.
On Friday morning, the popular breakfast program confirmed that Danika Mason would be stepping into the coveted role of sports presenter.
Longtime Nine Network viewers will recognize Mason from her work as an NRL sideline reporter, a role she has held since joining the network in 2012. Speaking with host Karl Stefanovic during the announcement, Mason expressed her gratitude and excitement for the new opportunity.
“I’m so incredibly thankful,” she shared. “It’s an honor to be part of the Today family, and I can’t wait to see what adventures this role will bring.”
She also reflected on how her career has come full circle: “Ten years ago, I was producing sport on Today—so this feels like a really special moment.”
Why Was Alex Cullen Let Go?
After serving as Today’s sports presenter for five years, Alex Cullen found himself at the center of controversy in January when he accepted a $50,000 gift from billionaire Adrian Portelli.
Portelli—nicknamed ‘Mr. Lambo’ following his appearances on The Block—promised to transfer $50,000 to the first person who called him ‘McLaren Man’ on air. After Cullen took him up on the challenge, Portelli posted what appeared to be a screenshot of a bank transfer made to an account under Cullen’s name.

Who Is Danika Mason?
While several journalists have temporarily stepped in to cover Cullen’s role over the past few weeks, Today has now confirmed that Danika Mason will take on the position permanently.
Mason first joined Nine in 2012 as an intern and has since built an impressive career in sports journalism. She has served as an NRL sideline reporter, an Australian Open courtside correspondent, and a producer for Today Sport and The Sunday Footy Show. She has also interviewed some of the biggest names in sports.
In addition to her new role on Today, Mason will continue working with Wide World of Sports, providing coverage for Sunday afternoon footy and Thursday night games from the sidelines.
Outside of her professional achievements, Mason made headlines in 2023 when she abruptly called off her wedding just three weeks before she was set to marry her fiancé of three years, Todd Liubinskas.
