After graduating high school in May 2021, he packed his bags and embarked on his next adventure as a college freshman. Kelly and Mark, despite being thrilled for their son’s new journey, found the transition emotionally challenging.

“We dropped him off at school and we gave him a hug — it was actually brutally painful,” Kelly revealed on Live With Kelly and Ryan. “And I said, ‘I did not realize that 18 years would go so fast.'”

Despite their unwavering support, Joaquin sometimes found his parents’ presence a little overwhelming. During a Daily Pop interview in July 2022, Kelly shared a hilarious moment when they visited him at school. “We came to see one of our son’s sporting events, and all we did was walk up to him. He was like, ‘You cannot meet me at my dorm, and you cannot be out front. And put your masks on your face. And nobody can know we’re together.'”

Michigan’s harsh winters also pushed Joaquin to make some unexpected changes. Initially, he relied on his bicycle to get around campus. However, once winter arrived, he realized that he needed a driver’s license to handle the freezing temperatures.
