Sheinelle Jones Confirms Her Return to TODAY After Extended Leave—But in a Brand-New Role.
Sheinelle Jones Set to Take on a New Position on TODAY
After a prolonged absence, Sheinelle Jones is officially set to return to TODAY—but this time, she’s stepping into a fresh role.
According to an exclusive report from The U.S. Sun, NBC executives have selected Sheinelle, 46, to permanently co-host the fourth hour of TODAY alongside Jenna Bush Hager, replacing Hoda Kotb. However, an official announcement won’t be made until Sheinelle completes her leave of absence.
“Sheinelle has already secured the role,” an insider shared, noting that the network is holding off on making it public until she’s back on air.
Sheinelle’s Absence and Support from Colleagues
Sheinelle has been missing from TODAY since December, and her absence extended to social media as well. The only update she provided came on January 15, when she briefly posted on Instagram, referencing a “family health matter.”

- Two birds with one stone Ellen DeGeneres not only made her wife happy but also successfully threw shade at the person who forced them both to “leave” the United States, all with a single action on her social media.
- Jimmy Fallon made his fans “hide their faces” with his “dishonest” behavior during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
- Angelina Jolie has proven that she has found her “peaceful harbor” in Akala, subtly hinting that she plans to “retire” from her career and return to being a woman focused on family.
Sources close to the show indicate that her colleagues have been “incredibly supportive” as she prioritizes her family.
Although Sheinelle was the top choice for the role, it’s been reported that Jill Martin, a lifestyle contributor on the show, also expressed strong interest in the position.
NBC’s Approach to Internal Promotions
NBC has recently focused on promoting talent from within, a strategy that was reinforced by the decision to move Craig Melvin into Hoda Kotb’s former co-anchor spot next to Savannah Guthrie.
“Viewers have responded positively to Craig, and ratings remain solid,” the insider explained. “That reaffirmed to executives that audiences prefer familiar faces and a sense of continuity.”
The network ultimately decided that Sheinelle was the best fit because of her extensive experience in live broadcasting. “Jenna brings a lot of personality, but she isn’t a traditionally trained anchor,” the source added. “They needed someone who understands the technical side of live television—someone who can guide conversations, smoothly transition segments, and manage the pace of the show. Sheinelle has that expertise.”
Fans Eagerly Await an Official Announcement
Currently, the fourth hour of TODAY follows a “Jenna & Friends” format, featuring a rotating lineup of celebrity guest hosts, including Scarlett Johansson, Amy Poehler, and Ciara.
However, fans have been pushing for the show to name a permanent co-host, with some arguing that Jenna needs a “seasoned anchor” beside her.
Sheinelle’s absence, especially during Hoda’s farewell episode on January 10, sparked questions among viewers. The show addressed this on January 15, with Savannah Guthrie reassuring fans:
“We know many of you have been asking about Sheinelle and missing her—we miss her too.”
Craig Melvin added, “We all love you, and we can’t wait for you to be back. See you soon.”
Fans flooded Sheinelle’s Instagram with messages of encouragement, expressing excitement for her return. TODAY’s official account even commented, “We love you, Sheinelle.”
Having been a key part of TODAY for over a decade, Sheinelle has built a strong fanbase. Before joining the network, she worked her way up through local news, earning recognition as a respected journalist.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Sheinelle is the daughter of Cardozie Darnell Jones II, a senior U.S. district judge.
