Savannah Guthrie Bluntly Challenges Al Roker on Today—Viewers Shocked by Heated Exchange: Genuine Tension or Just Playful Banter?
Savannah Guthrie and Jenna Bush Hager Are the Ultimate Duo—Especially When They Team Up to Tease Al Roker
Savannah Guthrie and Jenna Bush Hager share an undeniable bond, and when they join forces, their co-anchor Al Roker often finds himself on the receiving end of their playful antics.
During a recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Savannah sat down to discuss her upcoming book and opened up about the unique family dynamic among the Today show team.
“So, I heard you and Jenna have been messing with Al—was it something to do with singing?” Kelly inquired with a grin.
Savannah, 53, responded with a laugh, “Oh, that’s pretty much a daily thing. We absolutely love to sing—which is very different from saying we’re actually good at it—but in our heads, we totally are!”
The audience then watched a humorous clip of Savannah and Jenna serenading Al at close range. Clearly unimpressed, the veteran weatherman groaned, “Make it stop!”
“There we are, belting out Islands in the Stream,” Savannah recounted. “And the worst part? We truly believe we sound amazing. Meanwhile, Al’s just trying to escape.”
She also admitted that their colleagues often attempt to keep them apart to prevent spontaneous chaos. “They’re like, ‘Do not let those two sit together!’ Because the next thing you know, we’ll burst into song.”
Kelly chuckled and reassured her, “Well, it makes for great TV!”
“Thank you,” Savannah replied with a smirk, “Even if it’s not exactly on key.”

A Friendship Rooted in Faith, Family, and Fun
Beyond their on-screen chemistry, Savannah and Jenna share a deep friendship that extends to their families. Their daughters, Vale and Mila, are equally close, bonding over their mothers’ strong values and shared experiences of balancing career and parenthood.
On a recent episode of Today, emotions ran high when Jenna was moved to tears after watching a heartfelt segment featuring her goddaughter, Vale, interviewing Savannah about her new book.
Fighting back tears, Jenna, 43, reflected, “I feel so emotional because I’ve known Vale every single day since she was born. Many of us have. But beyond that, I’m so blessed to be her godmother.”
Choking up, she continued, “I’m just so proud of her. Everything you’ve instilled in your kids—your faith, your kindness—you’ve done it so naturally, without ever pushing it, and now, it’s a part of them. When the world feels dark, that kind of love and hope is everything.”
The bond between their families runs deep—Savannah is also the godmother to Jenna’s son, Hal. The duo and their children even vacation together, most recently enjoying a girls’ getaway in Palm Beach in early 2024.
“We actually planned this before 2024 even started,” Jenna shared on the show. “Vale had just been baptized, and Mila suddenly declared, ‘Girls, I think we need a trip just for us!’ And so, we made it happen.”

Al Roker Faces a Heartbreaking Family Loss
While the Today team is often filled with lighthearted moments, Al Roker recently experienced a personal tragedy. In February, his ex-wife, Alice Bell, passed away at the age of 77.
Their daughter, Courtney—whom Al and Alice adopted in 1987—took to Instagram to honor her late mother.
“She was my mother, my heart, and the most incredible grandmother to Sky,” Courtney wrote alongside a carousel of cherished memories. “I was with her as she took her final breath, and I will carry her love with me forever.”
Following Alice’s passing, Al took time away from Today to grieve and support his daughter through this difficult period.
