Rory McIlroy at the Center of a Private Feud—Leaked Email Exposes a Growing Divide

A private email exchange between Rory McIlroy and a fellow golfer has surfaced, exposing internal frustrations over his stance on LIV Golf. Is this the start of a deeper conflict within professional golf?
Rory McIlroy’s Remarks on LIV Golf Spark Heated Backlash
Rory McIlroy has never shied away from voicing his opinions on the ongoing divide between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, but his latest comments have struck a nerve with at least one well-known figure in the sport.

Golf Channel analyst Johnson Wagner openly criticized McIlroy after the four-time major champion suggested that all players—whether they stayed with the PGA or joined LIV—had benefited from the sport’s shake-up. Now, it has been revealed that McIlroy personally reached out to Wagner via email in response to his harsh criticism.

Johnson Wagner Confirms Private Email Exchange with McIlroy
During an appearance on Lucas Glover’s SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio show, Wagner admitted that McIlroy contacted him shortly after his public remarks.
“He emailed me Thursday night, and we exchanged a couple of messages, but I haven’t heard back from him since the first one,” Wagner revealed.

He also suggested that McIlroy’s agent reached out to Golf Channel executives, further indicating that the golfer wasn’t pleased with how Wagner framed the situation.
“The only thing I regret saying is that he angered me—that’s the only part I’d take back. But everything else? I stand by it 100%,” Wagner added.
McIlroy Calls for Players to “Move On” from LIV Golf Drama
The controversy erupted following McIlroy’s press conference at the Genesis Invitational, where he reflected on his recent victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. His statements regarding the ongoing tension between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour quickly sparked debate.
“Whether you stayed on the PGA Tour or left, we’ve all benefited from this,” McIlroy said.

“We’re playing for a $20 million prize fund this week—that would never have happened if LIV hadn’t come around. I think everyone just needs to move past it… Reunification is what’s best for the game.”
He went on to address lingering resentment among players, saying:
“If people are upset or holding grudges because some guys left [for LIV Golf], who cares? It’s time to move forward together.”
Wagner Pushes Back: “Rory Is Only Thinking About Himself”
Wagner wasn’t impressed by McIlroy’s remarks and made his frustrations clear during an appearance on Golf Channel that same night.
“He’s saying that ‘we’ve all benefited’—but that’s only true from his perspective,” Wagner argued.
“You know who hasn’t benefited? The sponsors—the ones who actually fund these tournaments. TV ratings are down, fan engagement is down, and yet they’re being asked to invest even more money.”

He also pointed out that McIlroy has previously been one of the strongest critics of LIV Golf, but now seems to be shifting his stance.
“Rory has said a lot of things over the last couple of seasons that didn’t sit well with a lot of players. Now, suddenly, he wants everyone to ‘just move on’? He’s pushing for a smaller, elite world tour that benefits top players like himself. I’m a huge fan of Rory, but right now, his comments are frustrating me.”

Is This Just the Beginning of a Larger Conflict?
While McIlroy reaching out to Wagner suggests he wanted to address the criticism directly, the lack of further communication raises questions about whether tensions have actually been resolved.
With the PGA-LIV divide still unresolved, McIlroy’s evolving stance has only added to the growing debate. Will this private feud spill over into the public eye, or is this just one of many behind-the-scenes conflicts shaping the future of professional golf?
