Rory McIlroy Admits ‘Many Want Me to Fail’ as Colleagues Distance Themselves After Netflix Appearance—His Tell-All Uncovers Golf’s Hidden Scandals!

Rory McIlroy Opens Up About a Difficult Year
After a whirlwind year filled with both professional and personal challenges, Rory McIlroy is finally speaking out about the toll it has taken on him.
The 35-year-old golf star shocked fans in May 2024 when he filed for divorce from his wife of seven years, Erica Stoll. However, just a month later, McIlroy withdrew the petition, reconciling with Stoll, 37, and opting to keep their marriage intact.
Now, in season 3 of Full Swing, Netflix’s behind-the-scenes golf documentary that premiered on February 25, McIlroy candidly reflects on the intense scrutiny he has faced both inside and outside the sport.
“There are parts of my life that I prefer to keep private,” he admitted in a confessional. “But in this line of work, that’s not always possible.”
How McIlroy’s Divorce Drama Took Over the PGA Championship
News of McIlroy’s initial divorce filing broke just days before the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. Despite the media frenzy, McIlroy refused to address the situation in his press conferences, hoping to keep the focus on his game.
Speaking about that difficult period, McIlroy later reflected, “I’ve always tried to protect my loved ones from people with ill intentions. That moment was a wake-up call for me—it made me realize I just needed to focus on golf for a while.”

The constant spotlight on his personal life, however, proved unavoidable.
Golf personality Dan Rapaport, featured in Full Swing, explained, “No one really cares about your personal life—unless you’ve won majors. That’s just how it is. The more successful you are, the more people want to know about you.”
Golf influencer Paige Spiranac echoed the sentiment, adding, “Oh, Rory. He’s just constantly in the firing zone. That has to take a serious toll.”
The Personal Struggles Behind the Scenes
By June 2024, following their reconciliation, McIlroy and Stoll’s relationship was still a major talking point. Netflix cameras even caught a revealing conversation between McIlroy and fellow golfer Martin Kaymer at the U.S. Open.
During their discussion, McIlroy mentioned that Stoll had been expressing interest in a lifestyle change.
“If it were up to her, she wouldn’t move to England right away, but she definitely wants to spend more time there,” McIlroy told Kaymer, 40.
McIlroy, who hails from Ireland, and Stoll, a New York native, share a 4-year-old daughter, Poppy. While he has spent nearly two decades navigating the pressures of professional golf, balancing the demands of his career with family life has proven to be another challenge entirely.
Where Does Rory McIlroy Go From Here?
Despite his efforts to stay focused on golf, McIlroy admits that the constant attention—both from the media and from those within the sport—has been difficult to manage.
“I’ve been doing this for 17, 18 years now,” he said. “I’d rather the focus be on my golf, but sometimes that just isn’t possible.”
As Full Swing gives fans an inside look at his highs and lows, McIlroy finds himself facing an even greater challenge—proving that, despite the controversy, he’s still one of the game’s top competitors.
