Despite her remarkable rise in 2023, Green recognizes the daunting challenge ahead. When asked about her goals for the season, she admitted that reaching the No. 1 spot in the world rankings might be out of reach due to Nelly Korda’s sheer dominance.
“It’s difficult. Obviously, most players set goals for the year, and since I won three tournaments, it’s hard to reset expectations,” Green shared.

Currently ranked sixth in the world, the Australian star has set her sights on reaching No. 2, acknowledging that overtaking Korda at the top seems nearly impossible.
“So, one thing I’ve been thinking about with my coach is my World Ranking. Realistically, with Nelly winning as many times as she did last year, I don’t think I can reach No. 1 unless I win just as often. I would love to be World No. 2 or World No. 3,” she admitted.
Korda’s performance last season was nothing short of extraordinary. She captured seven LPGA titles, including four consecutive wins, establishing one of the most dominant campaigns in tour history. With an average ranking score of 11.55, her lead over second-ranked Jeeno Thitikul is larger than the gap between Thitikul and the 45th-ranked player, Chanettee Wannasaen. That level of dominance makes Korda’s reign seemingly untouchable.
For Green, however, the challenge isn’t just about rankings—it’s about consistency. Having defended a title before, she knows what it takes to sustain momentum. Her 2023 victory at the JM Eagle LA Championship, where she edged out Aditi Ashok and Lin Xiyu in a playoff, was followed by a commanding three-stroke win over Maja Stark a year later. While history suggests she’s capable of rising to the occasion, she is careful not to place undue pressure on herself.
“I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself. But it does give me confidence playing at events where I’ve had success before. My focus is on being in contention at major championships,” she stated.
Aiming for Major Breakthroughs in 2024
Despite an impressive track record, Green knows there’s room for improvement. Last year, she made the cut in 16 out of 20 events, but missing the cut in two major tournaments was a tough setback.
“Unfortunately, I didn’t make the cut in some of the biggest tournaments last year. Those are the events we prepare the hardest for, and I think I put too much pressure on myself to perform well. This year, I’m hoping for a better season in that regard,” she said.
To take the next step, she will need to channel the confidence gained from her recent success into high-pressure moments, particularly at majors.
Who Stands in the Way of Green’s Title Defense?
With Nelly Korda absent from the HSBC Women’s World Championship, Green won’t have to face the No. 1-ranked player this week—but that doesn’t mean the competition will be any easier. The field is stacked with top-ranked players, including Jeeno Thitikul, Lydia Ko, Ruoning Yin, and Lilia Vu, all of whom are capable of challenging for the title.
Adding to the challenge, Green will tee off alongside Thitikul and Ko in a highly competitive grouping.
This year’s event also features all three 2024 LPGA winners—A Lim Kim (Tournament of Champions), Yealimi Noh (Founders Cup), and Angel Yin (Honda LPGA Thailand).
