On Tuesday’s episode of Today, Jenna Bush Hager and Savannah Guthrie reminded everyone what true friendship looks like. The emotional broadcast not only highlighted their close connection but also revealed the special bond their families share.
Savannah appeared on the show to promote her latest children’s book, Mostly What God Does Is Love You, and she had a particularly meaningful interviewer—her 10-year-old daughter, Vale.
The heartwarming segment saw Vale sitting down with her mother for a candid conversation while her younger brother, Charley, watched proudly from behind the scenes. The touching exchange moved Jenna to tears.
“I just want to weep,” Jenna, 43, admitted as she wiped away tears. “I’ve known Vale since the day she was born—many of us have. But also, I’m so lucky to be her godmother.”
Savannah, visibly emotional, laughed through her own tears. “Look at you crying! Now you’re going to make me cry.”
Jenna continued, expressing admiration for her friend’s parenting. “I’m just so proud of her. Everything you’ve instilled in your kids—your faith, your kindness, your love—it’s all reflected in them. And when the world feels dark, that gives me hope.”

Later in the show, Savannah joined Jenna on Jenna & Friends to dive deeper into the themes of her book. It was during this discussion that Jenna revealed just how intertwined their families truly are.
“One thing people may not know is that Savannah is my son Hal’s godmother, and I’m Vale’s godmother,” she shared.
Jenna, who is married to Henry Hager, is a mother to three children—Mila, 11, Poppy, 9, and Hal, 5.
She went on to explain that their deep discussions about faith played a role in Savannah’s decision to write her book.
“We have really meaningful conversations about faith,” Jenna said.
Savannah agreed, reflecting on how those discussions shaped her journey.
“Even with people I already know, these talks have opened up new ways to connect on a deeper level,” she explained. “And it doesn’t mean we always agree. You could come from different faiths—or have no faith at all—but there’s this universal longing for conversations that matter. That’s something I’ve really noticed on my book tour.”

A Friendship That Extends Beyond the Studio
Jenna and Savannah’s connection isn’t just for the cameras—it extends to their children as well. Just a few months ago, they took their daughters to a White House event, where the 10- and 11-year-olds giggled and embraced, proving their own friendship is just as strong as their mothers’.
Their families have also vacationed together, taking a trip to Palm Beach, Florida, in early 2024.
“We actually planned this before 2024 even started,” Jenna revealed on Today. “We planned it because Vale was baptized, and then Mila said, ‘Girls, I think we need a girls’ trip!’”
Savannah’s latest book is a children’s adaptation of her 2024 work, Mostly What God Does: Reflections on Seeking and Finding His Love Everywhere.
