Al Roker and Deborah Roberts open up about the heartbreaking loss of their beloved dog, Pepper, and the grief that followed. The family reflects on the love and memories they shared with their furry companion.
The Heartbreaking Loss of Pepper
Al Roker and his wife, Deborah Roberts, are no strangers to public attention, but a recent loss has left them deeply grieving. Their family dog, Pepper, passed away earlier this year after 12 cherished years together. While Pepper was a beloved member of their family, her loss has affected them profoundly.
In an emotional conversation with HELLO!, Al shared the sadness that came with saying goodbye to their loyal companion. “It’s tough,” he said, reflecting on the bittersweet bond they had with Pepper. “I remember saying to Deborah, almost 13 years ago, that the kids were really after us for a dog. And I said, here’s the thing: I’ve always had dogs. I’m not against it, but I know what’s going to happen.”

The couple had long known that the day would come when they’d have to say goodbye to their dog, but as Al shared, that didn’t make the loss any easier. “We’re going to have this dog, and it’s going to become part of our lives, and then the kids are going to grow up, and they’re going to leave. And we’re going to be with the dog, and then we’re going to lose the dog—and we are going to be heartbroken.”
Family’s Tribute to Pepper in Their Cookbook
Al and Deborah’s grief is palpable, but they’ve found solace in reflecting on the joy that Pepper brought into their lives. In their new cookbook Recipes to Live By: Easy, Memory-Making Family Dishes for Every Occasion, Al and his daughter, Courtney Roker Laga, paid a heartfelt tribute to Pepper. The book, which emphasizes the importance of family and creating lasting memories together, also includes a bittersweet acknowledgment of the family dog, who was with them through many life milestones.

As Al explained, losing Pepper has been tough for everyone, and well-meaning friends and family have asked if they were planning to get another dog. While Al noted that these comments were meant to be comforting, he admitted that the grief was still fresh. “I know people are well-wishing, but I’ve had a lot of people who were like, maybe a day or so after, saying: ‘So are you gonna get another one?’” Al said, reflecting on the emotional space they needed to grieve. “We need to settle down first,” he added, acknowledging that the loss was still deeply felt.
The Lasting Impact of Pepper
The Roker family adopted Pepper when she was just 10 weeks old from the Main Line Animal Rescue in Pennsylvania. From the moment she entered their lives, she became more than just a pet; she was a family member. Al, who initially had doubts about getting a small dog, quickly grew enamored with her personality. “I always made fun of the people with those little rat dogs, but the great thing about Pepper is she’s small, but she has a big personality,” he shared with People.
In the months following Pepper’s death, Al and Deborah have reflected on the unconditional love she gave. “She was just… It truly is unconditional love,” Al said, adding that he sometimes still thinks he sees Pepper out of the corner of his eye. While they’re unsure about bringing another dog into their lives right now, Al expressed that the void left by Pepper remains significant. “We really do miss her,” he admitted. “She was the perfect dog.”
