It has been nearly six weeks since Craig Melvin took on the role of co-anchor for NBC’s Today alongside Savannah Guthrie.
At 45, Craig stepped into the position previously held by Hoda Kotb, who departed the show after a 17-year run. Now, she’s embracing a quieter life in the suburbs, raising her two young daughters.
In a recent conversation with Westport Magazine, Craig shared his thoughts on receiving the unexpected call about Hoda’s departure, his satisfaction with his previous role, and the weight of stepping into such a high-profile position.
Craig Melvin on Taking Over Hoda Kotb’s Seat
“There aren’t many television institutions with true legacy status anymore, so being part of Today is something I don’t take lightly,” Craig shared. “It’s an incredible professional honor.”
He admitted that leading the show wasn’t something he had anticipated. “Honestly, I never thought I’d be the one sitting in this chair. I was content where I was. But then, the call came—Hoda Kotb was leaving—and I thought, Wow, this is real.”

“I grew up in Columbia, South Carolina. My mom was a teacher, my dad worked as a mail clerk—nothing about my life suggested I’d be here,” he said. “It still feels surreal. Every few years, I take a step back and think, Holy crap. This is incredible.”
He also joked about how deeply ingrained Today is in American culture. “When I step out onto the plaza at 8:30 a.m., I always tease Al Roker about this—someone will tell him, My grandma watched you 30 years ago!”
“And we both know their grandma has been gone for at least a decade. But that’s when you realize—you’re part of something bigger. Today isn’t just a TV show; it’s a multigenerational experience.”
Craig’s Vision for the Future of TODAY
When asked about his aspirations for the show, Craig emphasized his desire to bring new perspectives to daily headlines and expand coverage of sports. However, one of his main priorities? Highlighting fatherhood.
“We know from research that Today’s audience is predominantly female. But I truly believe plenty of men tune in, too,” he explained. “Fatherhood is something I’m deeply passionate about, and I think there’s room for more meaningful discussions around it.”
