A Private Story Becomes Public

During Wednesday’s “Hot Topics” segment, Whoopi Goldberg, 68, was discussing Haines’ upcoming Behind the Table podcast appearance when Behar, 82, took the conversation in a different direction.

“It’s exciting—Sara is on the podcast today with her wonderful parents, who are here with us,” Goldberg announced to the audience.

Behar then interjected, asking, “Are you going to bring up that same-sex relationship you had at Smith [College]?”

Haines’ Reaction to the On-Air Moment

Haines, 47, appeared momentarily stunned before laughing along with her co-hosts and the audience.

“Dad, earmuffs! Earmuffs!” she playfully shouted toward her parents.

Alyssa Farah Griffin, 35, quickly reminded Behar, “That was something she shared off-air.” Sunny Hostin, 56, joked, “Well, now it’s on-air!”

Haines brushed off the moment with humor, adding, “Luckily, my dad doesn’t always watch.”

Sara Haines’ Ties to the LGBTQ+ Community

Despite growing up in a conservative household in Iowa, Haines has long expressed strong support for the LGBTQ+ community.

In a 2016 interview, she shared that she played in a gay volleyball league with her brother, who is openly gay.

“I was raised in a traditional home, but attending Smith College broadened my perspective. Later, I played on my brother’s all-gay men’s volleyball team in New York and stayed involved,” she said.

“My experiences have given me a wide range of perspectives and friendships.”

A Happy Marriage and Family Life

While Haines explored a same-sex relationship in college, she has been married to Max Shifrin since 2014. The couple has three children: Alec, 8, Caleb, 5, and Sandra, 6.
