Charley Hull and her boyfriend’s jaw-dropping high-stakes bet—has she found a dangerous new source of motivation?

Charley Hull and Her Boyfriend’s Eye-Raising High-Stakes Wager—Is This a Risky New Motivator?

Charley Hull has added an unexpected twist to her season—placing a high-stakes bet with her boyfriend. But is this a harmless incentive, or could it be a dangerous new source of motivation?

Why Pro Golfers Don’t Usually Need Extra Incentives

Professional golfers are naturally driven by performance-based rewards. The sport is simple in its structure—the more birdies you make, the lower your score. A lower score means a higher leaderboard position, which translates into bigger prize earnings.

However, for players who compete at the highest level, these incentives can become overwhelming. The constant pressure to perform can be so deeply ingrained that athletes may not even recognize the weight they carry. Some pros find that creating personal challenges—beyond financial rewards—can help keep them engaged and motivated throughout the season.

Charley Hull’s Unique Approach to Staying Focused

For LPGA star Charley Hull, this year has been an intense ride, filled with travel, high-stakes competition, and back-to-back tournaments. As her 2024 season wraps up with The Annika, she has found a way to stay motivated—by turning her success on the course into a fun personal challenge.

Speaking to the media, Hull revealed that she and her boyfriend had made an unusual bet: for every five birdies she makes, they get an extra day added to their vacation.

“I was trying to make ten birdies so we could extend our trip. Hopefully, I’ll add more over the weekend and get a solid two-week holiday by the end of the year,” she said with a laugh.

The bet seemed to pay off immediately. Hull’s opening round at The Annika saw her sink seven birdies, earning her at least one extra day of vacation and positioning her near the top of the leaderboard at The Pelican Club.

Do These Extra Challenges Really Work?

Hull strongly believes that these additional incentives help sharpen her focus and boost her performance. When asked if side bets like this improve her game, she responded, “100 percent. They really do help me concentrate.”

This isn’t the first time she has used these kinds of wagers to fuel her competitive fire. She explained that such bets allow her to tap into a different side of her competitive nature. Rather than fixating on prize money and ranking points, these challenges provide a tangible, immediate reward—something beyond financial success.

Whether it’s a mental distraction or simply a fresh way to stay engaged, the approach appears to be working. Hull recently ended a two-year title drought with a victory at an LET event in Saudi Arabia, making her upcoming vacation even more well-earned.

What’s Next for Charley Hull?

With her season winding down and a well-deserved European getaway on the horizon, Hull’s unique motivation method has clearly been effective. But will this approach continue to help her perform at the highest level, or could the stakes eventually backfire?
