A Kitchen Mishap on Today
Celebrity chef and cookbook author Laura Vitale made a special appearance on Today to showcase fresh summer dishes, including a caprese pasta salad with grilled chicken and shrimp fajitas.
Hosts Al Roker, Dylan Dreyer, and Sheinelle Jones joined her in preparing the meals, but the segment took an unexpected turn when a blender malfunctioned at a crucial moment.
As Al attempted to emulsify ingredients, the appliance refused to cooperate, producing only a buzzing sound. Frustrated, he repeatedly tried to get it working, but nothing happened.
In a moment of exasperation, he smacked the blender in an attempt to revive it.
“What is it with blenders? They never work!” he exclaimed.
Miraculously, after the smack, the blender sprang to life.
“Now it wants to work!” Laura quipped, laughing.
With the technical hiccup resolved, the team continued preparing the recipes without further incident.
Al’s Playful Shade at His Co-Hosts
Off-camera, Al kept the laughs coming with a lighthearted jab at his colleagues during an Instagram Live session before the show.
Streaming from the Today set, Al, 68, gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at the pre-show hustle—crew members adjusting cameras, moving furniture, and preparing props.

As he chatted with a stage manager, the conversation turned to the upcoming lottery draw. That’s when Al playfully called out his co-hosts Dylan Dreyer, 41, and Craig Melvin, 44.
“We’ve got to hit Dylan up. Dylan, of course, will not have the money. Dylan—while we all know that Craig’s cheap—Dylan is the secret cheapster.”
Dylan, who arrived just a minute before filming started, took the joke in stride as Al softened the moment by complimenting her outfit.
“Bringing the sunshine!” he exclaimed, referencing her bright yellow dress.
Al’s Longstanding Teasing of Craig Melvin
This wasn’t the first time Al poked fun at his Today colleagues. He previously roasted Craig Melvin in a February episode, turning a discussion about Super Bowl costs into a comedic moment.
Business and data reporter Brian Chung broke down the average spending habits of Super Bowl attendees, revealing that last year, a beer and hot dog combo cost a staggering $18.
Craig was visibly shocked.
“That’s shameful! $18 for a hot dog and a beer? That is shameful. They should throw in the hot dog!” he said.
Al, never one to miss an opportunity for a joke, imagined a scenario involving Craig’s son.
*”I can see [Craig’s son] Dell now at the stadium. ‘Daddy, can we have a hot dog?’
‘No! I brought this bag of popcorn in here. You eat that and be happy!'”*
Dylan and Sheinelle burst into laughter, while Craig pointed at Al with a knowing smile.
“You know me well,” Craig admitted.
Al, still laughing, added:
“Eat before you go!”
