Roker’s Confession on The Late Show
During a guest appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Feb. 20, Roker opened up about how he gets into the right mindset for his morning show duties. His revelation took everyone by surprise.
“There’s this TV show—it’s kind of like Masterpiece Theatre but with a different twist,” he joked. “It aired in the late ’70s and early ’80s—it’s The A-Team.”
Colbert quickly acknowledged the reference, noting that the show starred George Peppard and Mr. T. Roker excitedly confirmed.
The Routine That Raised Eyebrows
Roker shared that before stepping onto the Today set each morning, he plays The A-Team theme song and recites the show’s iconic opening monologue.
“Like a pledge?” Colbert asked.
“Exactly,” Roker responded, before performing the entire introduction live:
“In 1972, a crack commando unit was imprisoned by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit. They promptly escaped from a maximum-security facility to the Los Angeles underground. Today, they live as soldiers of fortune, still wanted by the government. If you have a problem and no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire The A-Team!”
The studio audience erupted in applause, amused by Roker’s dedication.
Mixed Reactions from Fans and Colleagues
While some viewers and colleagues found Roker’s ritual entertaining, others were baffled by the eccentric tradition.
Reactions on social media ranged from admiration to amusement:
- “This is why I love Al Roker! The guy is a legend.”
- “Wait, does he really do this EVERY morning?”
- “We all have our hype-up routines, but this takes it to another level.”
A Longstanding Connection with Colbert
Ahead of his Late Show appearance, Roker reflected on his history with Colbert by sharing a nostalgic Instagram clip from their first meeting in 2008 during the Christmas in Rockefeller Center special. At the time, Colbert was promoting his holiday DVD A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All.
In the caption, Roker humorously reminisced, “We were kidding, but we had a great time.”
