Al Roker Faces Backlash Over a Controversial Breakfast for His Son—He Fires Back, But Is His Justification Enough?
Al Roker’s Breakfast Choice for His Son Sparks Debate—But He’s Not Backing Down
As a devoted father of three, Today meteorologist Al Roker treasures the time he gets to spend with his youngest son, Nick, especially while he’s home for summer break from college.
The 68-year-old TV personality has been making the most of their father-son bonding time, frequently enjoying outdoor meals in the spacious backyard of their Upper East Side brownstone. Al, a passionate home cook, often prepares meals for Nick, 21, who shares his love for food. However, one of his latest breakfast creations stirred up unexpected controversy among his social media followers.
On Thursday, Al took to Instagram to share a photo of the breakfast he made for Nick: crispy bacon, a cheese omelet, and a croissant, accompanied by a glass of orange juice.
“For Nick this morning after his morning run—cheese omelet, bacon, and a croissant,” he captioned the post.
While many praised Al for being such a caring and dedicated father, others were quick to criticize his meal choice, arguing that it wasn’t the healthiest option.

The Social Media Backlash—And Al’s Strong Response
While plenty of followers commended Al, calling him the “best dad,” others weren’t as impressed, questioning whether the meal aligned with healthy eating habits.
One commenter suggested he rethink Nick’s breakfast, writing:
“Maybe you’re setting his diet up for a midlife crisis. How about a scrambled egg without cheese, whole grain seeded toast, and some tomato slices? Just a thought. Diet habits are tough to break. Coming from someone who was raised on biscuits & gravy, ham hocks & beans, and buttery cornbread.”
Al didn’t hesitate to clap back, offering a detailed defense of his son’s lifestyle:
“Thanks for the concern. He had just finished a three-mile run. Then he did a 30-minute Peloton ride. He works as a groundskeeper at a local ballpark, comes home, does another run, and eats very sensibly for lunch and dinner. He makes great choices.”
A Father’s Pride: Al and Deborah Reflect on Nick’s Journey
Last year, Al and his wife, journalist Deborah Roberts, experienced a bittersweet milestone when they dropped Nick off at college in Vermont. Deborah shared the emotional moment on Instagram, writing:
“Wednesday wonder. After all the hard work. All the discipline. All the dreaming. All the prayers. His moment to soar has come. (I’m not crying. I promise.)”
She continued, “Pride doesn’t even begin to describe this day, Nick Roker. The journey continues.”
Nick’s college journey is especially meaningful to the family. Al has openly shared that his son is “somewhere on the [autism] spectrum and maybe obsessive-compulsive,” as he previously told Guideposts magazine.
“But those labels can be frustrating; they don’t begin to describe who Nick really is,” he explained.
While parenting can have its challenges, Al constantly expresses his deep admiration for his son.
“Do I get frustrated with my son sometimes? Absolutely,” he admitted. “But then I think about my dad—how patient he was. And Deborah always reminds me that I have to show Nick not just that I love him, but that I like him, too. More than that, I admire him.”
