Al Roker and Deborah Roberts reveal the emotional toll of discovering their son Nick faced bullying at college, while reflecting on the challenges and joys of parenting and grandparenting.
Al Roker and Deborah Roberts’ Emotional College Drop-Off
This past August, Today anchor Al Roker and his wife, ABC News correspondent Deborah Roberts, dropped their youngest son, Nick Roker, off at college. The move marked a bittersweet milestone for the couple, who have been navigating an empty nest as Nick begins his junior year.
“Dropped Nick off this afternoon. Hard to believe we have a college junior!! House is a little too quiet,” Al captioned a series of heartfelt photos on Instagram.
Deborah also shared her emotions, writing, “Well, that’s that. Move-in, done. Nest is empty again. … His smile ensures that we will all be okay.”
Despite the excitement of this new chapter, the couple was devastated to learn that Nick experienced bullying early in his college experience.

Learning About Nick’s Struggles
The couple recently opened up about their heartbreak upon discovering that Nick, who has worked hard to overcome learning disabilities, was bullied at his new school.
“As parents, it’s crushing to know your child is being treated unfairly, especially when you’ve spent years helping them build confidence,” Deborah shared.
Nick’s resilience and optimism have been a source of strength for the family. “He’s such a bright light,” Al said. “But moments like these remind us how much work is still needed to create inclusive and supportive environments.”
Joys Amid Challenges
Despite the challenges, Al and Deborah cherish their roles as parents and grandparents. The couple celebrated Nick’s 22nd birthday this summer and has been enjoying time with their granddaughter, Sky, who recently turned one.
