Al Roker Faces ‘Betrayal’ Accusations After Turning on the Doctor Who Helped His Autistic Son—How a Heartwarming Journey Took an Unexpected Turn!

Al Roker Honors a Life-Changing Therapist on Today
During a heartfelt segment on Today Thursday morning, Al Roker paid tribute to an extraordinary woman who has played a crucial role in his family’s life.
In a feature titled Al Pays It Forward, Roker shared the story of Lori Rothman, an occupational therapist who has dedicated her career to working with children on the autism spectrum. For over a decade, she has been a guiding force in the life of Roker’s son, Nick.

The Profound Impact of Lori Rothman on Roker’s Son
Reflecting on Nick’s early struggles, Roker recalled, “He had a lot of challenges. He didn’t speak, he couldn’t walk, and his core strength was very weak.” When the family first sought Rothman’s help, Nick was just three years old, and many experts had a bleak outlook on his development.

“But with Lori, there was never any negativity,” Roker shared. “She always believed in him.”
Now, at 13 years old, Nick has grown into a strong and determined teenager with a passion for Taekwondo.
Rothman, who affectionately calls him “Nicky,” described her work with him in an emotional moment. “Some kids are 50-piece puzzles, some are 100-piece, and some are 150. Nicky, if I had to describe him, is a 150-piece puzzle,” she said.
Her bond with Nick runs deep. “My heart is so big for Nicky,” she continued. “He’s my son. Well, he’s a little bigger than me these days, but he’s my son.”

A Special Thank You for a Special Person
Although Roker didn’t delve into the current challenges his son faces, he did acknowledge how overwhelming it can be for parents.
“When you realize something isn’t right with your child, it can feel paralyzing,” he admitted. “You don’t always know where to turn.”
To show his gratitude for Rothman’s unwavering support, Roker arranged a surprise trip to Miami earlier this month—combining two of her greatest passions: running and Serena Williams.
Rothman joined Roker and his wife, Deborah Roberts, in the Serena Williams Live Ultimate Run, a 5K race benefiting the tennis star’s charitable foundation.
And as a highlight of the trip, she even got to meet the legendary athlete herself.
The Unsung Heroes Behind Every Family’s Journey
Roker acknowledged that professionals like Rothman make all the difference in a child’s life.
“Everyone, in some way, has a ‘Lori’ in their life,” he said. “They may not even realize it. These are people who could be doing something else for more money, but instead, they dedicate themselves to helping our children.”
Beyond Nick, Roker and Roberts are also parents to their 17-year-old daughter, Leila.
