Football fans have fumed at a ‘soft decision’ that saw Ousmane Dembele bring down Angel Di Maria, allowing Lionel Messi to fire Argentina ahead from the penalty spot.
Lionel Messi has his World Cup final goal – but some fans think Angel Di Maria went down too softly in the build-up.
Di Maria ducked and weaved his way into the penalty box, forcing Ousmane Dembele to make a challenge. However, the Barcelona winger could only make contact with Di Maria’s trailing leg, sending the Argentine tumbling.javascript:void(0)
All Messi had to do was turn in the ball from the spot – and he sent Hugo Lloris the wrong way with ease. However, as fans celebrated Messi’s brilliance, others questioned if the little magician should have been given the chance.
One fan fumed: “This is a dive. Di Maria goes down, trips over his own feet. Dembele got beat, but I have a hard time thinking he would risk such a petty foul in such a big game!”
“Di Maria was already falling when there was contact. Soft,” a second fumed. While a third tweeted: “Di Maria couldn’t wait to hit the deck and the ref couldn’t wait to give it, Horrifically soft but dumb from Dembele!”

Di Maria’s afternoon would get even better 12 minutes later – when he finished off a superb Argentine move to double the Albiceleste’s lead.
Messi collected the ball in the centre of the park, and after a slick one-two, Julian Alvarez released Alexis Mac Allister – who had the entirety of the Lusail Stadium ahead of him. Mac Allister squared the ball to an onrushing Di Maria, who found the net.
The PSG man was seen in tears as he returned to the centre circle after sending Argentina into dreamland.
Dembele, meanwhile, was having his own personal nightmare as Di Maria ran riot down the French right-hand side.
Didier Deschamps was so enraged with what he had seen he hooked Dembele, and Olivier Giroud, before half-time.
