From Roberto Martinez to Luis Enrique – the 2022 World Cup might just prove beneficial to Premier League sides with several top managers now available for hire in 2023.
The 2022 World Cup has proven to be less than forgiving for the managers of underperforming nations with the likes of Roberto Martinez and Luis Enrique now on the lookout for new employment.
Although some exits were pre-planned and some others made by mutual decision, there are several top managers now on the market – who could just end up in the Premier League.
Zululion have taken a look at each of the nine head coaches that have for one reason or another left their posts – with one opting to retire.
Roberto Martinez
Roberto Martinez moonwalked out of his final interview as Belgium boss following their miserable group stage exit following six years in the role.
He said: “That was my last game with the national team and it’s emotional as you can imagine. It was going to be the end whether we were world champions or out in the group stage.”
What next for the former Wigan and Everton boss? Having been linked with a return to Goodison Park last season, he might well be interested now with Frank Lampard under pressure.
Tite
Former Brazil boss Tite wasted no time after their defeat against Croatia to call time on his spell as manager of the national side.
He said: “The cycle ended and I said that one-and-a-half years ago and I keep to my word. We cannot make a drama. There are other great professionals that can replace me. The cycle is over.”
Having managed several clubs in his native country and others in the Middle East, those two familiar paths might well interest the 61-year-old.
Gerardo Martino
Former Barcelona boss Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino is no longer manager of Mexico following their group stage exit in Qatar.
Martino said: “The contract expired with the final whistle and there is nothing else to do. I am the man responsible for the frustration and disappointment.”
Martino will be sure to get job offers despite taking on the blame, with an MLS return a good bet thanks to his success with Atlanta United after leaving the Argentina job.

Luis Enrique
Luis Enrique’s Spain side started off their World Cup with a 7-0 win over Costa Rica – and didn’t win another game as they lost to Morocco in the last 16.
In a bizarre message after leaving the national role, Enrique said: “One player, but I won’t say the name. One player didn’t end up being what I thought and I would have changed him for another player.”
Enrique, who won a treble during his time at Barcelona, is a safe bet to take charge of a European powerhouse – and is said to be on Atletico Madrid’s shortlist.
Diego Alonso
Uruguayan coach Diego Alonso left his role as national team manager after they failed to make the knockout stages despite beating Ghana in their third fixture.
He said: “I deeply regret we are out of the World Cup, I truly believe in these players and what they could have achieved in this World Cup.”
The former Inter Miami and Monterrey boss might well look at club management following his resignation, with a club role in Europe potentially on the horizon.
Louis van Gaal
Louis van Gaal wasted no time in resigning from his role as Netherlands manager following their quarter-final exit at the hands of Argentina in Qatar.
The former Manchester United boss said: “First and foremost I won’t be continuing. I only did it for this period of time. This was my very last match of my third term as head coach.”
Following three spells in charge of his national team and several club roles, the 71-year-old has now announced his retirement having been treated for prostate cancer back in April.
Fernando Santos
Fernando Santos looks to have run out of luck in his role as Portugal manager having led them to Euro 2016 glory – following a disappointing Euro 2020 and 2022 World Cup.
Despite it not yet being officially announced, Portuguese media says that their football association are on the lookout for a new boss.
Santos, 68, might well call time on his managerial career following eight years with Portugal which followed four years with Greece.
Otto Addo
Otto Addo has returned to his role at Borussia Dortmund after taking over the Ghana role on a temporary basis back in February.
Addo said after the group stage exit: “I always said if we qualified for the World Cup I’d resign afterwards, even if we were world champions.
“My family see our future in Germany.”
Paulo Bento
Despite leading South Korea into the knockout stages of the tournament before coming up against Brazil, Paulo Bento decided his time as their manager was over.
He said: “At the moment, it’s not easy to summarise everything that’s happened in the World Cup, especially because it hasn’t finished, I can only tell you about our journey, which has already come to an end. It has come to an end in a very fair way.”
Before his latest role, Bento spent time four years as Sporting manager and four years with Portugal – and might now return to club management.
