FA Cup fourth round draw as Man Utd, Arsenal and more discover fate

The sides still left in the FA Cup found out who they will play in the fourth round of the world’s oldest football competition – with several big clashes to look forward to.

The FA Cup fourth round draw brought about mouth-watering fixtures that could see several Premier League giants face off.

Manchester City could play Premier League title rivals Arsenal at home earlier than many would have anticipated – should they beat Chelsea in their third round clash on Sunday. And Mikel Arteta’s Gunners – who are the competition’s most successful ever side – will first need to win at Oxford United on Monday.javascript:void(0)

Meanwhile, Manchester United will take on Reading at Old Trafford after beating Everton 3-1 on Friday. Liverpool have the difficult task of travelling to Brighton, should they defeat Wolves in their third round replay.

Another tantalising clash will be Tottenham Hotspur’s visit to Preston North End – who are currently 10th in the Championship. Spurs edged past Portsmouth in an otherwise frustrating tie on Saturday courtesy of a Harry Kane stunner.

Lower division clubs such as Wrexham were unable to secure the huge clashes with Premier League sides that they had hoped for. Wrexham advanced to the fourth round after a dramatic 4-3 home win against Sheffield United.

Seven footballers who were mega rich before sport – including Gianluca Vialli

Late Italian football icon Gianluca Vialli grew up in a stunning 60-room castle thanks to his father’s millions – but he is far from the only footballer to have come from lavish beginnings.

Chelsea legend Gianluca Vialli sadly passed away at the age of 58 on Friday morning.

The Italian died after a five-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He will go down as a true great best known for his stints at Sampdoria, Juventus and Chelsea – where he became a player-manager and then manager.

While many will know of the prolific striker’s on-pitch prowess, some may be unaware of his fascinating background, growing up in a lavish 14th century castle. Zululion brings you seven footballers who were super rich before they ever kicked a ball, including the legendary Vialli.

Who better to start with than the man himself? Long before netting 40 goals in 88 appearances for the Blues, Vialli was living the high life in a 60-room castle.

He lived with his parents and four siblings in Castello Di Belgioioso, Cremona, thanks to his dad’s huge wealth. The forward went on to use the castle as an occasional holiday home in his later years.

His mother, Maria Teresa, is once claimed to have said: “We are bourgeois, that’s what we are.”

Andrea Pirlo

Which player do you think had the best football career? Let us know in the comments section.

Joining Vialli on the list of mega-rich stars is compatriot Andrea Pirlo – another ex-Italy and Juventus star that oozed class.

The dapper midfielder-turned-manager grew up extremely wealthy due to his dad’s successful steel company. Along with the millions made as a result of playing football at an elite level for well over a decade, Pirlo is said to still have a stake in the family business.

These days, the 43-year-old epitomises opulence by owning his personal vineyard.

Gerard Pique

Recently-retired Gerard Pique became as well known for his business ventures off the field as his performances on it in the latter part of his career.

But the Barcelona legend was certainly no stranger to money growing up. Pique grew up with his dad being a top lawyer and businessman, while his mum was the director of a hospital.

And even more stunningly, his grandfather Amador Bernabeu, was once a Barcelona director – the same club where the centre-back went on to make over 600 appearances.

Faiq Bolkiah

Arguably the richest footballer to have ever played the game is little known former Chelsea prospect Faiq Bolkiah. Bolkiah grew up being the nephew of the Sultan of Brunei – worth a reported £16billion. No pressure then.

The 24-year-old Los Angeles-born star looked set for big things after spending his teenage years at Southampton, Chelsea and Leicester City. Bolkiah’s career has since tailed off and he now plays for Thai club Chonburi.

Ah, well. As the heir to the Sultan’s fortune, it’s not as if he needs the money anyway.

Mido

Premier League fans may remember the original ‘Egyptian King’ Mido. The striker enjoyed a brilliant season on loan for Tottenham in 2005/06, scoring 11 goals before signing a permanent deal.

But Mido was already accustomed to the limelight, growing up as the son of Hossam Wasfi – a professional footballer for Zamalek. His dad later set up his own successful travel agency.

Mario Gotze

World Cup final goal-scorer and winner Mario Gotze is the son of a renowned professor. Jurgen Gotze held a research position in the computer science department of America’s prestigious Yale University in the 1990s.

Professor Gotze more recently worked at Dortmund University of Technology – the same city where his son became a teenage sensation. The playmaker’s rapid progression through the ranks at Dortmund was even believed by some to be a result of his dad’s money and influence.javascript:void(0)

Patrick Bamford

Contrary to popular belief, Patrick Bamford is not the heir to construction equipment manufacturer JCB. He is, however, a distant relative of Joseph Bamford, founder of the multinational company.

And he is from good stock. Former Chelsea striker Bamford, now at Leeds, went to private school and plays the violin. He had an opportunity to go to Harvard University in the US before deciding on a career in football.

Cristiano Ronaldo left stunned and faces humiliating wait to make Al-Nassr debut

Cristiano Ronaldo has been left shocked after his Al-Nassr debut was pushed back – and the forward faces a humiliating wait to get going as he still needs to serve his two-match ban.

Cristiano Ronaldo faces an anxious wait to discover if his debut for Saudi Arabia side Al-Nassr will be put on hold until the end of this month.

Ronaldo has been left stunned after the Saudi outfit’s league game against Al Tae’e today (Thursday January 5) was postponed – due to heavy rain causing an electrical fault at their Mrsool Park stadium. Al Nassr bosses are attempting to re-arrange the game for tomorrow after drafting in a team of electrical specialists.

But if the problem cannot be fixed Ronaldo will be denied the chance to serve the first game of his two-match suspension. Ronaldo, who has signed a deal worth $400m (£335m), is pencilled in to make his debut for the Saudi Pro League side against Al-Ettifaq on January 22 – once he completes a two-match suspension imposed by the English FA in November for knocking a phone out of an Everton fan’s hand in a game with Manchester United at Goodison Park last season.

FIFA rules state that suspensions imposed by national associations must still be served by players in the event of a transfer to a different country before the ban has been completed.

Ronaldo’s ban was confirmed after his United contract was cancelled during the World Cup.

With the 37-year-old unable to play against Al Tae’e or Riyadh rivals Al Shabab on January 14, Ronaldo’s first chance to turn out for Al-Nassr will be against Al-Ettifaq on January 22.

But if the game against Al Tae’e cannot be re-scheduled for Friday and doesn’t go ahead, Ronaldo’s suspension would then cover the games against Al Shabab and Al-Ettifaq, leaving him waiting for his debut until the Saudi Super Cup semi-final against Al Ittihad in Jeddah on January 25.

And now he may be made to wait until January 25 to make his debut if Al-Nassr's match against Al Tae'e isn't rescheduled for Friday
And now he may be made to wait until January 25 to make his debut if Al-Nassr’s match against Al Tae’e isn’t rescheduled for Friday

Al-Nassr said in a statement: “Due to heavy rain and weather conditions impacting the stadium’s electricity, we have been officially informed that tonight’s match against Al Tae’e is postponed for 24 hours.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to fans and wish everyone safe travels.”

Chelsea hero Gianluca Vialli grew up in a stunning 60-room castle that he later used as an occasional holiday home – thanks to his father being a self-made millionaire.

Vialli, who sadly passed away at the age of just 58 this week following a second battle with pancreatic cancer, went on to become a world famous football star and Chelsea icon.

The 15th century castle became the family home thanks to his father’s wealth, with Vialli going on to have two daughters after marrying Cathryn White-Cooper in 2003.

Castello di Belgioioso is described as a culturally rich in historical and artistic value with a grand staircase, atrium and extended grounds.

Vialli lived in London despite his coaching career there coming to an end long before, with his family flying over to visit him in hospital back in December.

Those visitors included his 87-year-old mother as well as his brother, whom he grew up with the the huge castle before he began his football career.

Vialli, who made 59 appearance for the Italy national side during a playing career in which he had spells for Cremonese, Sampdoria, Juventus and finally in west London.

Having quickly adapted to life in London, the prolific striker helped the club to FA Cup glory in 1996/97 before becoming player-manager of the Stamford Bridge outfit – scoring a total of 40 goals across 88 games.

He led the team to League Cup glory the following season as well as the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, UEFA Super Cup and finally the FA Charity Shield in 2000.

Vialli also showed his lighter side during his time in west London, attributing his goalscoring exploits in 1997 to having an active sex life.

“It is because I am busy making love as much as possible,” Vialli told the Mirror when asked about his predatory instincts in front of goal.

“I feel extremely fit. In the summer I worked a lot. Swimming, bicycle work, running, and making love as as much as possible. The only trouble is that it’s not too good for my back.”

That prompted Chelsea’s player-manager Ruud Gullit to respond: “Is that what he said? As long as he’s happy.”

Years later, he got a great reaction after appearing on Goals on Sunday opposite Ben Shepard and Chris Kamara for his assessment of how good it feels to score a goal.

He said: “I hate former players saying scoring a goal is like reaching an orgasm… because you know, it’s an unbelievable feeling. When I scored four goals in less than 60 minutes I thought, is this possible? Four orgasms in 60 minutes!

“No. For me scoring a goal was like sticking my fingers in a socket, like an electric shock. You get a shock without the pain. You feel a tremendous amount of energy and you do some silly things that you are ashamed of when you see them afterwards.”

Having left Chelsea he spent time with Watford before moving into punditry, joining the Italy national side under Robert Mancini almost 20 years later.

In that role he helped Italy to Euro 2020 glory at Wembley with a win over England on penalties, holding the trophy aloft on the pitch in his role as delegation chief.

Vialli stepped down from his role after revealing that his pancreatic cancer had returned in December of 2021, with his passing announced over a year later on January 6.

Following news of his illness, Chelsea fans revealed a classy tribute during their recent clash against Manchester United, with another tribute to ahead of their next home fixture against Crystal Palace.

Tributes from the football community have been heartfelt following the news of Vialli’s passing, with his impact on European football felt across the continent.

Sky Sports colleague Graeme Souness broke down in tears as he spoke about his friend. “He was just a truly nice human being. I went to Italy when I was 31 years old and he was 20. He was just fabulous to be around,” Souness said.

Adding: “He was such a fun-loving guy, he was full of mischief, he was such a warm individual and a fabulous player. But I don’t want to talk about his football, I want to talk about him as a human being.

“When I hear his name, and I’m gonna hear a lot of his name, correctly so with people playing plaudits to him and saying magnificent things about his playing ability, yeah. But what a human being.

“Above all that, what a human being. My condolences go to his family and his wife. They’ve been blessed that their paths crossed, the kids were blessed they had a dad like that, his wife was blessed she was married to a man like that.”

But after speaking for eight minutes, Souness was overcome with emotion and was unable to continue as he broke down in tears.

Other to pay tribute to the star included Premier League great Alan Shearer, who wrote: “RIP Gianluca Vialli. What a lovely lovely man and a wonderful player he was.”

Chelsea’s official Twitter account tweeted: “You’ll be missed by so many. A legend to us and to all of football. Rest in peace, Gianluca Vialli.” As Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti wrote: “Goodbye my friend. RIP Gianluca Vialli.”

Another former Sky Sports colleague Chris Kamara said: “Devastated to hear the news RIP Luca – a fabulous career and a great fella. A wonderful life has been cut short. I am well and truly gutted Gianluca Vialli it was an honour to have known you.”

Pele’s funeral leaves football fans in floods of tears during emotional send-off

Brazil and the rest of the football world said their final goodbyes to Edson Arantes do Nascimento, more commonly known as Pele, during an emotional ceremony in Santos.

Football fans wept and waved goodbye to ‘the King’ at Pele’s funeral in Santos.

The only man to win three World Cup titles passed away aged 82-years-old on December 29. He had been fighting a year long battle against colon cancer and even had a tumour removed from his colon in September.javascript:void(0)

However, the Brazilian’s condition gradually got worse and worse, until he passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family members, just after Christmas. Pele was certainly given a send off fitting for a player of his prestige, skill, and beauty.

Thousands of football fans waited to say their farewells to the legendary forward.

Many fans struggled to hold back the tears while many wept for some time as Pele was brought from Urbano Caldeira Stadium home ground through to the streets of Santos.

The iconic yellow and green colours of Brazil, whether it was flags or football shirts, permeated the capacity crowd. One supporter even proudly showed off a tattoo of the legendary player wearing a crown on top of his head.

Pele was hailed as the King by the thousands of supporters present. Brazilian president Lula da Silva was also in attendance for Pele’s final journey.

However, the newly elected leader of Brazil was heavily booed and castigated by the Santos crowd, with many labelling him a ‘thief’ while others shouted ‘you should be in prison’. While the country may be heavily divided politically, they all came together to say goodbye to Pele.

Reports from the Mirror understand his mother Celeste will be the final person to say goodbye to Pele at the funeral. His older sister Maria Lucia do Nascimento revealed the 100-year-old was unaware her son had passed away.

“We talk but she doesn’t know the situation. She’s in her own world,” Nascimento said recently. “She opens her eyes when I mention his name and say, ‘We’re going to pray for him’ but she’s not really conscious of what I’m saying.”javascript:void(0)

‘Cursed’ Drake loses $1m bet on Argentina despite Lionel Messi leading them to glory

0

‘The Drake Curse’ has been one of the most unusual coincidences in sport over the last five years and he almost ruined Lionel Messi and Argentina’s World Cup hopes.

Canadian rap star Drake lost $1m (£818,710) after betting on Argentina to win the World Cup – in normal time.

Lionel Messi was finally able to get his hands on the one trophy that had eluded him throughout his glittering career. After a pulsating 3-3 draw which saw the South American giants lose a two goal lead in the opening 90 minutes to France and collapse in the dying stages of extra-time while leading 3-2, Lionel Scaloni’s side were the ones who were able to hold their nerve in the penalty shootout.javascript:void(0)

However, Drake was not quite able to revel in Argentina’s celebrations, despite the fact he lent his backing to La Albiceleste. Unfortunately for him, his bet was not quite broad enough to secure himself a hefty $2.75m (£2,253,707.50) in winnings.

Sporting a Napoli shirt in honour of legendary Argentina Diego Maradona, Drake was evidently team Argentina on this occasion. “I’ll take Argentina, he’ll take France. That will be a vibe,” Drake said while recording with a friend.

Drake needed Argentina to overcome France in 90 minutes to secure the prize-pot. They appeared to be destined to do just that when Messi stroked home a first half penalty and Angel Di Maria finished off a stunning counterattack to double the lead before half-time.

However, two goals in two minutes from Kylian Mbappe took the match into extra-time and lost Drake his prize money. Luckily for Argentina, they did not completely find themselves on the losing side of the final.

Drake recently lost $2m (£1,639,060) after backing Israel Adesanya to defend his UFC Middleweight title against Alex Pereira. Despite going in as the favourite, Adesanya lost to the Brazilian at UFC 281, who secured the victory in the fifth and final round with a stunning left hook that sent him crashing down to the canvas.

The Canadian also placed $649,000 (£531,874.97) on a hefty accumulator backing Barcelona to win the El Classico against Real Madrid and Arsenal to beat Leeds United. While Mikel Arteta ’s side did manage to squeeze their way past the Yorkshire giants, Real Madrid outclassed the Catalans to win El Classico.

They are the more recent examples of the Drake curse, which has seemingly jinxed so many sports people and teams. While he chose not to show support with his bank account, he did seem to jinx the Canadian national team, as they suffered a group stage exit, losing all three of their matches, days after posing for photos with Drake. The rap star’s previous list of victims also includes Anthony Joshua on the eve of his shock defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr and Conor McGregor’s defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2019.

Lionel Messi scores World Cup final pen – but fans fume at ‘soft’ decision for Di Maria

Football fans have fumed at a ‘soft decision’ that saw Ousmane Dembele bring down Angel Di Maria, allowing Lionel Messi to fire Argentina ahead from the penalty spot.

Lionel Messi has his World Cup final goal – but some fans think Angel Di Maria went down too softly in the build-up.

Di Maria ducked and weaved his way into the penalty box, forcing Ousmane Dembele to make a challenge. However, the Barcelona winger could only make contact with Di Maria’s trailing leg, sending the Argentine tumbling.javascript:void(0)

All Messi had to do was turn in the ball from the spot – and he sent Hugo Lloris the wrong way with ease. However, as fans celebrated Messi’s brilliance, others questioned if the little magician should have been given the chance.

One fan fumed: “This is a dive. Di Maria goes down, trips over his own feet. Dembele got beat, but I have a hard time thinking he would risk such a petty foul in such a big game!”

“Di Maria was already falling when there was contact. Soft,” a second fumed. While a third tweeted: “Di Maria couldn’t wait to hit the deck and the ref couldn’t wait to give it, Horrifically soft but dumb from Dembele!”

Di Maria’s afternoon would get even better 12 minutes later – when he finished off a superb Argentine move to double the Albiceleste’s lead.

Messi collected the ball in the centre of the park, and after a slick one-two, Julian Alvarez released Alexis Mac Allister – who had the entirety of the Lusail Stadium ahead of him. Mac Allister squared the ball to an onrushing Di Maria, who found the net.

The PSG man was seen in tears as he returned to the centre circle after sending Argentina into dreamland.

Dembele, meanwhile, was having his own personal nightmare as Di Maria ran riot down the French right-hand side.

Didier Deschamps was so enraged with what he had seen he hooked Dembele, and Olivier Giroud, before half-time.
